Industrial and Municipal Fire Services. Are they working together?

In many circumstances, you'll see an industrial fire reported in the media. There will be footage of the incident available to view. What you don't see is how the public and private fire services are working with each other and the great efforts that have been made in advance to ensure a coordinated response.

All fire departments have an end goal and that is the protection of life and property. This is the same for both municipal departments and industrial fire services. These organizations will be very similar in some respects and different in others.

This is where working together greatly increases the overall ability to respond effectively. Through organizational interoperability, these organizations can acheive the end goal. Municipal fire departments need to ensure they focus on ability respond to industrial fires or emergencies on a daily basis, even the largest fire departments can often focus most of their training and attention on residential and commercial structures, vehicles or wildland firefighting. Industrial fire fighters need to work with their municipal colleagues as they may have limitations in their ability to respond due to qualifications held. Municipal departments need to be made aware of these limitations. By working together they can gain massive advantages in the following areas:

Improved Safety for the Public and Personnel

Timely sharing of critical information about hazards and other dangers between fire fighting organizations and an understanding of responsibilities and capabilities will reduce risk of harm to the public, facilities and response personnel.

Increased Resilience of Operations

When working together and faced with a situation beyond normal response capabilities, the adoption of interoperable arrangements will improve the emergency services ability to be resilient.

Increased Confidence amongst Emergency Service Personnel

Improved situational awareness enhances coordination across services and can drastically limit the risk of harm faced by organizations because they’ve access to consistent and accurate information.

Improved Command and Control

Establishing communication between leaders within the response teams promotes collaboration. At industrial incidents there may be many tactical differences in the approach to firefighting between municipal and industrial services. By working together this can all be discovered prior to responding.

We're always interested in anything that helps in improving your response capabilities. That is the reason [D4H]™ Technologies was created.
