Summer Interns: An Insider View

We have had Kelly Farrell working with us as an intern for the past month with our marketing department. Kelly is a 19 year old Marketing, Innovation and Technology student from Dublin City University. She was even in work the day that she got her summer exam results so we planned this fun surprise for her on the big screen! No pressure at all! Keep reading to get an insider view on working as an intern in D4H!

Working in [D4H] the past month has been incredibly rewarding and I have learned a lot. Having only completed one year in college so far, its safe to say that I was still pretty clueless as to how successful businesses are run in the 'real world'. There's no doubt about it, there's only so much that you can learn in a lecture hall-there's no comparison to actually getting practical experience. Seeing as my degree is focused on the marketing of innovative technology, [D4H] was a perfect fit!

Content Distribution

I was certainly kept busy here. I was assigned projects on a weekly basis which challenged me to research creative solutions to problems currently faced by the marketing department. The projects focused mainly on improving the D4H experience for current and prospective customers. I looked specifically at better distributing our blog content and optimising certain areas of the D4H website such as the landing page to make for a more appealing and enjoyable experience for our visitors.

I found looking at the blog really interesting as I myself run my own blog and I was able to pick up some useful blogging tips. Looking at the blog and content was great because I was able to gain insight into the industry as a whole as well as the lifestyle of responders. I was even allowed to write a few posts and distribute them around LinkedIn and Google+ Communities. I really enjoyed this part because I had the opportunity to talk to real industry professionals and discuss their views on a variety of different topics.

Landing Page Optimisation

Looking at the whole area of landing page optimisation was also a cool project. I found it interesting how the smallest change you make to a webpage can greatly improve the visitor experience and improve chances of conversion. I got the chance to research these landing page optimisation techniques and make suggestions to the team based on my research.

During my time here, I have add the chance to work on projects that have been both challenging and worthwhile. I felt like my suggestions were listened to and taken on board. There was a great mentoring system in place which meant I had a certain degree of independence within the projects but support was always at hand. The team were great to work with and were always willing to answer my many questions! The atmosphere in the office was always really friendly and the fact that the guys did a count down the day I got my results was hilarious! It was a good thing that I passed everything because that could have been really awkward!

My internship at [D4H] has been hugely beneficial to me on many levels and I feel better equipped for the demands of the remainder of my time in university knowing that I have relevant, real world experience under my belt.
